Do I need an environmental permit to replace my historic windows?

Do I need an environmental permit to replace the glazing in my historic building?
In most cases, yes. For protected buildings or properties located in a protected area in Wallonia, an environmental permit is generally required to replace the glazing. The Walloon Heritage Agency (AWaP) assesses whether the work is consistent with the historic character of the building. Therefore, please contact your municipality or the AWaP before starting the work.

Is BENGglas’s heritage glass accepted by the AWaP?
BENGglas meets the technical requirements applicable to protected buildings, including a thin profile starting at 6.7 mm, preservation of the original appearance, and the option of a wavy glass surface with BENGglas Monu or Monu Restover. Always discuss the specifications with your municipality or the AWaP in advance before placing an order.

Is my building a protected heritage site in Wallonia?
You can check the heritage status of your property via the AWaP’s online portal at patrimoine.wallonie.be.

Can BENGglas be used in sash windows or stained-glass windows?

BENGglas cannot be used in muntin windows with individual panes. However, your dealer can apply adhesive muntins to the glass. Because vacuum glazing is so thin, you’ll hardly notice any difference from real muntins. Your dealer can also combine stained glass or secondary glazing with BENGglas. BENGglas does not supply the muntins or the stained glass itself. Read more about heritage glass.
