What is fire-resistant glass?
Fire-resistant glass is glass that helps slow the spread of fire, smoke and heat. It is used where a building is divided into fire-resistant zones, such as facades, windows, doors, facades and partitions.
Fire resistance is expressed in classifications such as E, EW and EI. The time period is also important, such as 30 or 60 minutes. Which version is needed depends on the application, the frame and the tested glass construction.
BENG glass combines the strength of Pyroguard fire-resistant glass with the insulating power of vacuum glass. This makes it suitable for projects where fire safety and sustainability are both important.
Fire-resistant glass with high insulation
Fire-resistant glass from BENG glass, offers up to 60 minutes of fire resistance as well as 3x better insulation than HR++ in one solution. Due to the low thickness of vacuum glass , a slim construction starting at only 15 mm is possible. As a result, the glass is not only lightweight, but also fits into existing window frames.
Benefits at a glance:
- Superior insulation up to U=0.35 - up to 3× better than HR++
- 30 or 60 minutes fire resistance - possible with EW or EI classification
- Slim glass construction from 15 mm - suitable for many façade and frame situations
- Safety - available with injury safety and fall-through safety according to NEN 2608
Need advice for your project?
Fire-resistant glass must always fit within a tested structure. That is why we are happy to look at the application, the desired classification, the frame and the insulation and safety requirements for each project.
Fire-resistant glass 30 minutes or 60 minutes
Fire-resistant glass is available in different classifications. Many projects involve 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance. Which version is needed depends on the application, the building and applicable fire safety requirements.
The classification is always determined on the basis of a tested glass construction. This takes into account such factors as flame density, heat radiation and temperature transmission. The frame, mounting and location of the glass also play a role.
For facade applications, BENG glass offers solutions with EW30 or EW60 classifications. This way you combine fire safety with strong insulation, injury safety and fall-through safety within an appropriate, tested structure.
Advantages of fire-resistant glass
Fire-resistant glass from BENGglas combines the safety of fire-resistant glass with the insulation strength and slim construction of vacuum glass. It slows the spread of fire, smoke and heat for up to 60 minutes, helping to better protect people and buildings.
Where traditional fire-resistant insulation glass often does not insulate as well, BENG glass combines fire safety with an extremely low U-value up to U=0.35 that is as much as 3x better than HR++ glass. Ideal for facades of offices, factory halls, healthcare facilities and other commercial buildings where safety and energy efficiency come together.
- High fire safety - possible with 30 or 60 minutes fire resistance
- Strong insulation up to U=0.35 - up to 3x better than HR++ glass
- Slim glass construction from 15 mm - fits even in slim and lightweight window frames
- Safe in use - two-sided injury and fall-through resistant
- Supported by an independent test report - always based on a tested structure
Ordering fire resistant glass
Fire-resistant glass requires the right solution for each project. The glass construction depends on the application, the desired fire resistance, the frame and the requirements for insulation and safety.
That's why we look at your situation first. Is it a facade, window, door, facade or fire separation? Is 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance required? And should the glass also meet requirements for injury safety or fall-through safety?
Based on this, we advise which BENG glass solution fits within a valid test structure. This way you combine fire safety with strong insulation and a slim glass construction.
When is fire-resistant glass mandatory?
Fire-resistant glass is mandatory when glass is part of a fire separation, for example between two fire compartments. In the Building Works Decree for the Environment ( Bbl), there is a requirement for the resistance to fire penetration and spread (WBDBO).
- Fire penetration
This is where a fire spreads from one room to another via internal walls or ceilings - i.e. not via the outside air. The fire resistance of these separation structures is determined according to NEN 6069 (reference from NEN 6068). - Fire spread
In this case the fire spreads via the outside air to another room. This is assessed in accordance with NEN 6068, which specifies the resistance to fire penetration and spread between spaces.
BENG glass and Pyroguard
BENG glass can be combined with Pyroguard fire-resistant glazing. This allows different EW and EI classifications, always depending on the tested structure and the requirements of the project.

Frequently asked questions
Welk glas is brandwerend?
Wanneer is brandwerend glas verplicht?
Daarom is vooraf advies nodig.
