What is solar control glass?
Solar control glass, also known as heat-reflective glass or HR++ solar control glass, is (standard) insulating glass with a special solar control coating. This coating reflects and filters a large portion of the sun’s heat, preventing an interior space from heating up as quickly.
The degree of solar control is expressed by the G-value (also known as the ZTA value). The lower the G-value, the less solar heat the glass allows through. This helps prevent overheating in the summer, while in the winter, the glass actually helps retain heat.
As a result, solar control glass ensures a stable and comfortable indoor climate year-round. Due to the special coating, slightly less light enters than with clearer insulating glass. That difference is small, while the effect on temperature is clearly noticeable.

The LTA value indicates how much daylight the glass transmits. The higher this value, the brighter the window.Solar-control vacuum glass consists of only two glass panes and, with a minimum thickness starting at 8.3 mm, is significantly thinner than standard solar-control HR++ glass or triple-pane glass. Fewer layers of glass mean less light loss. As a result, light transmission remains higher, even with solar-control coatings.

Solar-control glass: what are the drawbacks?
Solar control glass is a strong choice if you want to save energy, limit UV radiation, and keep the interior comfortable. However, it’s important to also consider potential concerns when making your decision.
1. Less daylight and visibility
Solar control glass contains a coating that filters out the sun’s rays. As a result, the glass may have a darker tint, which affects the amount of daylight and the clarity of the view outside.
With BENGglas’s solar-control vacuum glass, this effect is less pronounced than with many traditional solutions. Thanks to the minimal glass thickness of just 8.3 mm (compared to approximately 21 mm for HR++ solar-control glass), there are fewer glass layers, and light transmission remains higher.

Color difference in solar control glass

Color differences mainly occur when glass from different series or from different manufacturers is combined. That’s why it’s important to always choose solar control glass from the same product line and the same manufacturer. What is the LTA value and why is it important?
The LTA (light admission factor) value indicates how much natural daylight comes in through the glass. The higher the value, the more light enters your home - and you notice it right away.
Daylight not only makes your home more pleasant to live in, it also helps save energy. Because the more light that comes in, the less often you have to turn on the lights.
More or just a little less light? You choose
Not every room needs the same amount of light. In a home or building with a lot of glass or direct sunlight, a lower LTA value may actually be pleasant. This way you avoid bright glare, overheating or discoloration of furniture and floors.

Good news! Thanks to the Sustainable Energy and Energy Saving Investment Subsidy (ISDE), you get a nice compensation if you preserve your home with BENG glass:
- € 25 per m² if you only replace the glass with BENG glass (registration code: KA18780)
- € 111 per m² if you also replace your window frames (report code: other)
- € 46 per m² if you live in a national monument and replace the glass with BENG glass
