BENGglas / LandVac recently obtained an Environmental Product Declaration. The Chinese manufacturer of vacuum glass, represented in Europe by BENGglas in Goirle, had ten building configurations assessed.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a third-party verified document that complies with EN 15804 and ISO 14025. It provides objective data on the environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle. EPDs allow you to compare the ecological footprint of building products using environmental impact indicators, such as the Global Warming Potential (GWP). The most important value for comparing products is the so-called “embodied carbon value” (A1–A3), expressed in kg CO2-eq/m².
Better than triple-pane glass
The key finding is that BENGglas / LandVac 8.3 millimeters has a carbon footprint of 40.5 kg CO2-eq/m² for the production phase. “A standard triple-pane glass configuration of 4(14)4(14)4 comes out to 59.7 kg CO2-eq/m2,” says Youri Creutzberg of BENGglas. “That’s a difference of approximately 32 percent in favor of BENGglas.” Comparing it to triple-pane glass makes sense, as the U-value of vacuum glass is comparable to that of triple-pane glass: 0.7 W/m²K and lower. BENGglas 8.3 millimeters has a U-value of 0.45 W/m²K. Creutzberg: “With these calculations, we have the most comprehensive EPD in the vacuum glass sector. Not just one product, but ten separate configurations have been analyzed: four standard thicknesses, three laminated variants, and three hybrid compositions.”
EPD for float glass
For glass manufacturers, an EPD is crucial for distinguishing themselves from the competition. For example, the industry average for 4-millimeter float glass is 12.24 kg CO2eq/m2. AGC Glass Europe reports emissions of 10.3 kg CO2eq/m² for 4-millimeter float glass. Glas Trösch EUROFLOAT and Guardian ExtraClear standard float glass (4 mm) are just below that, at 9.83 kg CO2eq/m2 and 9.64 kg CO2eq/m2, respectively.
EPD for low-carbon glass
The EPDs for low-carbon glass products from various manufacturers are also available. Guardian NEXA 6 and Guardian NEXA 9 each have their own EPDs with embodied carbon values of 6.38 kg CO₂eq/m² and 8.58 kg CO₂eq/m² (4 mm glass), respectively. Low-carbon glass from AGC and Saint-Gobain (ORAÉ) score 5.5 and < 7 kg CO2 eq/m2 (4 mm), respectively. According to the company’s EPD, Pilkington Mirai low-carbon glass has the lowest CO₂ emissions at 5 kg CO₂eq/m² (4 mm). It is also possible to manufacture vacuum glass using low-carbon glass. AGC now produces FINEO vacuum glass as standard in low-carbon glass. The 8-millimeter Low-Carbon FINEO has carbon emissions of just 18.9 kg CO₂ eq/m².
